Parent Information Center
Materials related to student issues can be found in the elementary office. Brochures have been set out in a display rack for parents at no charge. Please come in and browse through our newest materials and take what interest you. A sample of the information, Help Your Child Develop an ‘I Can Do It’ Attitude has been included with this newsletter.
Children who are successful in school are like the engine in the story The little Engine That Could. Successful students say to them, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can!” Teachers know that children who think they can be successful in school usually are. And, those who think they can’t usually aren’t. Here’s how you can help your child develop the positive attitude that can lead to success in school…and in life.
The End of Another School Year and Public Library Activities
School is close to ending another year and students will go home and get away from the rigorous daily academic routine. The rigor usually slows down, but the academic routine needs to continue. Check out the Public Library’s programs for children this summer and keep your child reading over the summer. We will be taking students to the library near the last days of school to draw awareness to what they have to offer.
Mark you calendar for the following events at the Public Library this summer.

Internet Safety at www.NetSmartzKids.org
The internet is a resource of vast amounts of information, both good and bad, that will continue to grow as a key resource in your child’s life. A few tips are offered to help them use the internet safely.
Internet safety will always be a priority for our students. This website is a safe way for your children to be interactive while they learn about being safe on the internet. Take some time to check out the site at home or the public library the next time you are there.

Elementary School Site Council News
The school would like to thank the following individuals who volunteered their time to serve on the council this year. President & Staff Member Ellie Atcheson, Vice-President/PTA Representative - Jim Peterson, Secretary/Administrator – Dwight Stoppel, Non-Certified Staff Member – Connie Wright, Parent - Debbie Fagan, and Board of Education Member - Diane Kimball.
Community and parent members serve a one year term and have the opportunity to extend an additional year. Any parent can request to be placed on the council. All interested individuals are voted on by the council. Debby Fagan and Jim Peterson have expressed interest to serve another year, but Cindy Cook would like to open her position for another parent. Therefore, if you are interested in filling that position give the school office a call. Positions will be filled at the September meeting.
What does the Site Council do?
The Site Council serves as a recommendation organization to the board of education and administration. The meetings are used to discuss issues that may not be resolved through school building channels, and share opinions on latest educational events and topics.
May Calendar Events
Make sure you check the Elementary School activities found on the attached district calendar.
OCES Summer School Offered From July 7 to August 1
Last year’s program gained support to continue having summer school during late summer. The overall consensus was that it helped prepare students for a new school year rather than building on the old one. The design of the program will remain the same as teachers build on student’s prior reading and math knowledge in one or both of those content areas. The program will still provide individual and group assistance to struggling students in grades 1-3 and 4-6 for one hour per content area each morning. Our summer program is offered first to students that have been referred by their teacher. Parent notices will be sent home for those students near the first of May. Parents of students that are considerations will be contacted regarding available openings.

Enrollment for the 2008-09 school year will be held on August 5, 6, & 7.
